Kodaikanal Season Overview
Kodaikanal sits at an altitude of 2,133 metres (6,998 feet) above sea level in the Palani Hills of Dindigul District, Tamil Nadu. This elevation gives it a cool, pleasant climate throughout the year — making it one of South India's most loved hill stations for honeymooners, families, and solo travellers alike.
Unlike most Indian hill stations, Kodaikanal does not have extreme cold winters or blazing summers. The temperature rarely drops below 5°C or rises above 25°C. However, the character of each season is dramatically different — and choosing the right time can completely transform your experience.
🏡 A Note from Our Local Team
We have been based in Kodaikanal for over 15 years. Every morning we wake up to this hill station's mood. The fog rolling in at 6 AM in December, the bright sunshine of April, the dramatic rain of July — we have seen it all. This guide is not copied from the internet. It is written from real, daily experience of living and working in Kodaikanal.
Winter Season — October to February
Temperature: 5°C to 18°C • Fog: Heavy • Rainfall: Low
If you ask any Kodaikanal local, this is the season we love most. October brings the end of the northeast monsoon, the air clears, and the hills emerge in a fresh green coat. By November, the famous Kodaikanal fog begins to appear — thick, white, rolling mist that covers the lake, the roads, and the entire town in a magical white blanket.
December and January are the crown jewels. Temperature drops to 5°C to 8°C at night. Mornings begin with dense fog. Coaker's Walk disappears into white mist. The lake reflects grey skies. Couples walk hand in hand wrapped in shawls. This is why Kodaikanal is called the romantic fog capital of South India.
February is slightly warmer but still beautiful. The fog becomes lighter, giving way to clear blue sky mornings with stunning valley views. It is perhaps the most photogenic month of the year.
Book your Kodaikanal honeymoon trip for December 15 to January 15 for maximum fog experience. Wake up at 6 AM and step outside your room — you will be surrounded by thick white mist. No photo filter needed. This is real Kodaikanal magic.
Summer Season — March to May
Temperature: 12°C to 22°C • Fog: Occasional • Rainfall: None
When the rest of India is burning in summer heat, Kodaikanal remains a cool paradise. This is why April and May are the absolute peak tourist months — schools have holidays, families from Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore and Hyderabad all flock to the hills to escape the heat.
Temperature stays between a very comfortable 12°C to 22°C during the day. The skies are clear and blue, offering spectacular views of the Palani Hills and the valley below. Pillar Rocks, Dolphin Nose, and Green Valley View are at their most visually stunning during these months.
Book Early for Summer! April and May are the busiest months. Hotels fill up 2–3 weeks in advance. Our honeymoon packages sell out fast during this period. We recommend booking at least 3 weeks ahead for summer travel. Call us at +91 9488 233 703 to check availability.
Monsoon Season — June to September
Temperature: 11°C to 20°C • Rainfall: Very Heavy • Roads: Slippery
Kodaikanal receives rainfall from both the southwest monsoon (June–August) and the northeast monsoon (October–November). The southwest monsoon brings very heavy, continuous rainfall. Daily rainfall can be 50–100mm during peak monsoon weeks.
While the hills look breathtakingly lush and green during this period, the practical challenges are real. Roads become slippery and occasionally blocked by landslides. Many viewpoints are completely covered by rain clouds, not fog. Outdoor sightseeing is difficult and often impossible for days at a time.
However, if you do not mind the rain and want Kodaikanal all to yourself at budget prices — July and August are perfect. Hotels offer 30–50% discounts. The waterfalls like Vattakanal Falls and Pambar Falls are at their most powerful and dramatic. The entire valley turns an impossibly deep emerald green.

Best Time for Family Trips
Families with children will find April, May, and October to be the most comfortable months. During April and May, school summer holidays mean children are free, weather is warm and pleasant, and all sightseeing spots are open and accessible. The Kodai Lake boat rides, cycling, Bryant Park, and Silver Cascade waterfall are all at their best.
October is an excellent off-peak family option — fewer crowds, lower prices, fresh green hills after the monsoon, and pleasant weather before the cold sets in.
What to Pack — Season Wise
Winter (October – February)
Pack heavy woolens, thermal inners, warm socks, and a windproof jacket. Nights can be 5°C to 8°C, which is cold for most South Indians. Carry gloves if visiting in December or January. Even during daytime the temperature stays cool — a sweater or light jacket is essential at all times.
Summer (March – May)
Light woolens or a medium jacket for evenings. Daytime is warm enough for cotton clothing. Sunscreen is essential — UV levels are higher at altitude. Carry a light rain jacket as occasional afternoon showers are possible in May.
Monsoon (June – September)
Waterproof jacket, good grip footwear, and a strong umbrella are essential. Avoid wearing open sandals — roads and trails are extremely slippery. Pack quick-dry clothing. Carry medicines for motion sickness as misty, rainy mountain roads can cause nausea.
